Chamomile Tea Improves Sleep Quality

Sleep stands as a fundamental human requirement, and any disruption to its natural cycle not only impacts mental well-being but also impedes individual performance. Disturbances in sleep are a noteworthy health concern, affecting physical, mental, and emotional health, and the quality of sleep is crucial for overall life satisfaction.

Even a brief interruption in the sleep pattern over a week can expose individuals to various health risks, including cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, endocrine disorders like diabetes, and immune system disorders.

Chamomile flowers, often consumed as a potent tea, are recommended for improving sleep and inducing relaxation, especially for individuals dealing with insomnia. Chamomile, an ancient medicinal herb from the Asteraceae/Compositae family with two common varieties, contains numerous active compounds. One of these, apigenin, binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, generating a mild tranquilizing effect that encourages drowsiness and alleviates insomnia.

As per a study published in J Educ Health Promot. 2017; 6: 53, a four-week intake of chamomile extract significantly improved sleep quality. The same study noted a moderate impact of this extract in easing symptoms of sleep disorders and enhancing the daily performance of individuals with sleep issues compared to a placebo.
