Static stretching

Stretching is a method used to maintain or increase one’s flexibility. Mobility or flexibility exercises seek to retain and/or improve joint mobility by stretching the muscles rather than joint structures such as the ligaments which provide stability.

Many texts and articles recommended stretching in the morning or in the evening.

To be effective, stretching exercises need to be of the correct type which usually means gentle loosening exercise s and prolonged static stretching rather than vigorous ballistic stretching movement.

A static stretching is slow and constant with the end position held for 30 seconds. A static stretch includes the relaxation and concurrent elongation of the stretched muscle.

Static stretching provides the greatest benefits while having the least negative effect with respect to injury. Static stretching involves stretching to the farthest point the person comfortably can. Static stretching can be further divided into different class:

*Static passive stretches – are stretches on which the person assume a position and hold it for an extended period of time. The individual makes no contribution to generating the stretching forces.

*Static active stretches – are more advances positions in which the person stretching provides the force of the stretch and assistance comes only by contracting the opposing.
