Plank exercise

Exercise is a helpful way to reduce body weight and can prevent obesity by maintaining and/or increasing the muscle mass and basal metabolic rate.

The immune system is large and complex and has a wide variety of functions. The main role of the immune system is to defend people against germs and microorganisms.

Exercise (or exercise-training), a subcategory of physical activity, is planned, structured, repetitive and intentional bodily movements intended to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness

Regular moderate-intensity exercise diminishes the risk of infection. Exercise allows immune cells to perform effectively — it increases blood flow, reduces stress and inflammation, and can strengthen antibodies.

Strenuous exercise leads to the activation of several cell lines within the immune system, such as neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages, which all are capable of producing ROS (reactive oxygen species).

Neutrophil concentrations increase during and after exercise, whereas lymphocyte concentrations increase during exercise and fall below pre-values after long-duration physical work (Sports Med 6: 333–363, 1988).

Neutrophils are phagocytes that play an important role in the innate immune response, usually being the first cell type recruited to the infection site. Thus, they are involved in many of the inflammatory processes, including those in muscular tissue, promoted by the exercise.

Exercise may also increase the production of macrophages that assaulting bacteria, associated with upper respiratory tract diseases.

Cardio-exercise

Cardiovascular exercise is simply any activity that raises the heart rate to a level where the person working, but can still talk. The term refers to exercise that causes positive adaptations to the heart and lungs. There are many forms of cardio-exercise but they can be categorized into 2 groups: aerobic and anaerobic.

Cardiovascular exercise (or ‘cardio’ for short) has many benefits. It is the key to weight loss and it also helps to:
• Strengthen heart and lungs, and increase bone density
• Improve sleep and reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression

Research has shown that the intensity of exercise, rather than its quantity or frequency, is more important for improving - and especially maintaining – fitness.

The more intense the workout, the greater and longer the post-workout elevation in metabolism, which burns more calories even while he or she on the couch.

The frequency of workouts will depend on the fitness level and the person schedule. Beginners should start with 3 non-consecutive days of cardio and work their way up to more. The general guidelines are:

Can stress be reduced by exercise?

Feeling stress is a common experience and is part of “defense mechanism” to better combat unusual situations or “adaptive behavior. Stress is an exceedingly complex concept. Both highly positive and negative events require adjustment, detract from the quality of life, and affect one's stress levels. Negative life events (e.g., losing one's job, the death of a child, a serious illness) are obvious stressors.

It is probably impossible to eliminate stress and anxiety, but one can learn to manage them. While there are variety of treatments for stress and anxiety reduction such as medication, cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation techniques, coping skills, recreational activities and family support, physical exercises may be the one most recommended by health care professionals and very successful to deal and to relieve stress and anxiety symptoms.

Exercise has been linked to numerous physical health benefits such as improving weight, blood pressure, lowering the risks of cardiovascular disease and other illnesses, and even increasing longevity. Anxiety, depression, and hostility (or negative affect) are typical stress symptoms. Since exercise is associated with short-term mood benefits, it is an effective approach to stress reduction for members of both normal and highly stressed populations.

Sweat glands are spread out all across the body in varying concentrations that are designed to produce perspiration.

The main function of sweat gallons is to produce sweat which plays a vital role in maintaining body temperature: the evaporation of water from sweat aids in dissipating heat from the skin surface.

Each gland has a tube for secreting sweat and a narrow passage that carries sweat to the skin’s surface. There are around 2.6 millions sweat glands over an average human body, so they can quickly coat the skin in a film of water when the body gets too hot.

Certain conditions such as exercise can lead to the generation of heat stress that has to be controlled by the secretion of sweat.

The heart is a muscle that just contract in order to move blood. Each heart beat is composed of two phase, known as systole and diastole.

Sweating

Sweating is the body’s way of keeping its internal temperature at a constant 98.6°. When the body’s temperature rises, the body’s sweat glands are stimulated to start producing water to cool off the body.

During exercise, an increase in body temperature as a result of metabolic heat production is the primary stimulus for sweating. Normally, sweating is initiated as a specific core temperature and continues in proportion to increase in core temperature.

There are around 2.6 million sweat glands over an average human body, so they can quickly coat the skin in a film of water when the body gets too hot. This water is heated by the heat energy in human bodies and as it evaporates heat is lost to the air.

People working in a hot, dry environment, as much as 2,000 mL/h of water may be produced by eccrine sweat glands and lost by evaporation.

Exercising Your Brain Can Stave Off Memory Loss

Exercising your brain is as important as exercising your body for your overall health, and to stave off memory loss and the risks of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

Your memory is dependent on the health of your brain. Staying mentally sharp as you age plays a huge factor in your future mental acuity. It's fairly easy to stay sharp when you're young and studying and/or working. But when you retire and cut down on your activities, it isn't as simple.

No matter how old you are, it is possible to boost your brain power. Your brain can benefit from exercise at any age, just like your body. The proper stimulation will open neural pathways and enhance your memory.

How do you exercise your brain? It can be as simple as studying a language or learning something new. It may take more of an effort than when you were younger, but the results will be well worth it.

Challenge yourself with brain-boosting activities which mandate your attention and time. Get outside of your comfort zone. Engage in an activity that's unfamiliar, one where you will have to develop new skills. And when you've mastered a new skill, don't forget to reward yourself. That communicates to your brain that you're enjoying the benefits of that skill or activity, and that it's enjoyable and very satisfying to you.

Keeping in touch, and socializing, with friends and family may also serve to stave off memory loss. Humans are a social species and isolation can lead to depression and loneliness that will affect your brain and memory.

Minimize stress in your life. Stress can affect aging in mental and physical ways. Learn some stress-reduction methods you can use on a regular basis, and make plans to get rid of stress factors that could lead to memory and physical problems.

You've likely heard the old adage, "if you don't use it, you lose it." That is especially relevant in regards to exercising your brain. Change your routine, learn something new and challenge your brain if you want to keep memory loss at bay.

Isometric exercise

Isometric exercise presents unique physiological demands. Hettenger and Muller first popularized it in the 1950s, describing it as muscle contraction against an immovable subject.

An isometric exercise can be done by:
*Pushing against an immovable object or
*Holding a weight in a position with the muscles contracted

More specifically, active muscle contraction occurs with an absence of any limb movement or change in muscle length. Isometric muscle actions occur during normal human activity.

Research has shown that isometric exercise can significantly increase the tension of the muscle. Thus, a person can achieve maximum muscle contractions by performing isometric exercises, in contrast to regular isotonic weight training. Significant cardiovascular effects can occur with isometric exercise, including marked elevation of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Other normal cardiovascular response includes increase in heart rate and sympathetic neural activity. There also can be greatly elevated stress to the left ventricular wall.

Triceps muscles

Muscles can only pull; they cannot push. There are two muscles along the upper arm: the biceps and triceps.

The triceps is attached to the ulna. When the triceps contracts, it gets shorter and fatter. This pulls on its tendon, which pulls the ulna. The lower arm drops.

The main function of the triceps group is to extend the forearm. All three heads are involved, regardless of the position of the hands and shoulders.

Isokinetic exercise

Dynamic exercises produce muscle fibre lengthening and/or shortening, allowing the joint to move through a range of motion and generate a force. The combination of low resistance and high repetitions enhances endurance.

Isokinetic exercise, a form of dynamic exercise, is done on machines that control the velocity of joint movement. Isokinetic exercise can be defined as an exercise with an accommodating resistance and a fixed speed.

Since the machines provide resistance proportional to muscle strength at each point in the range, the machine speeds controls the muscle torque.

Theoretically, if an individual is putting forth a maximum effort during each repetition of exercise the contracting muscle produces variable but maximum force output, consistent with muscles variable tension-generating capabilities at all portions in the range of movement.

Anaerobic exercise

With anaerobic exercise, ATP is needed quickly to perform an activity. It is defined as a physical motion intense in power and strength, yet short in duration. Anaerobic activities do not depend on oxygen metabolism at all because the exercise intensity is high and the duration is less than 2 or 3 minutes.

Theoretically, anaerobic activity is the type of movement or exercise used in the ‘fight’ response. Anaerobic exercise (e.g. resistance training, sprint training) increases and help maintain lean body mass, which is the most metabolically active tissue in the body.

Anaerobic energy systems are of two major types. The immediate energy system is used for high-intensity activities that last less than 30 seconds, such as running the 100-meter dash or lifting heavy weights. Here, the muscles use ATP and creatine phosphate (CP) supplies at are already stored in the muscles, which last only 1 to 10 seconds.

The lactic acid system is a second source of energy for anaerobic activities. This system generates ATP for high-intensity activities lasting from 30 seconds to 3 minutes, such as the 400-meter or 800 meter run, which continues after the ATP-CP system for approximately 5 to 6 minutes.

Lactic acid has an incredibly fatiguing effect on muscle contraction. Because the full redistribution of blood takes 4 to 6 minutes, depending on the condition of the individual, initial oxygen supply is minimal at best.
