Benefits of brisk walking

‘Brisk’ walking (at least 3 mph) is a moderate intensity physical activity and evidence-based intervention for promoting physical activity. It is already prevalent, has no skill, facility or equipment requirement and is more accessible and acceptable than other forms of physical activity.

All walking is beneficial, but for the greatest benefits to heart, lungs and blood pressure, brisk is best. The breathing should be a little faster, feeling a little warmer and can feel the heart beating a little faster, but you still feel comfortable and are able to talk.

Walking is a much gentler form of exercise and is not just great for human body, but also human mind. Power walking on the other hand will raise the heart rate and give an aerobic workout.

Particular conditions and risks factors where benefits could be gained include:
•high blood pressure– Through a reduction in resting blood pressure associated with a reduced risk of death from stroke and coronary heart disease
•diabetes – Due to increased insulin sensitivity
•being over-weight or obese– By increased energy expenditure and increased metabolism
•with mild to moderate depression or anxiety – Through improved mood
•with musculoskeletal issues, such as lower back pain – By a reduction in inflammation and pain

Regular walking improves mood, reduces anxiety, aids sleep and improves self-image.
