Vitamin B1 for healthy mind

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is an essential dietary factor; its deficit causes polyneuritis in animals, development of cardiovascular and neurological disorders inhuman, beriberi (a thiamine deficiency disease) and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

It serves as a cofactor for several enzymes involved in energy metabolism. The thiamine-dependent enzymes are important for the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters and for the production of reducing substances used in oxidant stress defenses, as well as for the synthesis of pentoses used as nucleic acid precursors.

Thiamin pyrophosphate is a cofactor for dehydrogenase enzymes with key roles in cellular energy production. Thyamin pyrophosphate is required for transketolase activity, which is a component of the pentose phosphate pathway, the sole source for the synthesis of ribose used in synthesis of the nucleic acids (DNA and RNA).

The brain uses this vitamin to help convert glucose into fuel, and without it the brain rapidly runs out of energy. This can lead to fatigue, depression, irritability, anxiety, and even thoughts of suicide. Deficiencies can also cause memory problems, loss of appetite, insomnia, and gastrointestinal disorders.
