The benefits of endurance exercise

Lack of physical activity due to a widespread sedentary lifestyle contributes to some of the most prevalent diseases of modern civilization, including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and depression.

Endurance refers to the body’s physical capability to sustain an exercise for an extended period. Endurance in sport has been defined as the ability to maintain or repeat a given force or power output. Endurance exercise is the act of exercising to increase endurance.

It’s made up of two components: cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance. Muscular endurance is the ability of body muscles to work continuously without getting tired.

Endurance exercise training exerts many positive effects on health, including improved metabolism, reduction of cardiovascular risk, and reduced all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.
Regular endurance exercise induces improved performance in concentration tasks and yields a particular benefit for spatial and verbal memory.

Several reports suggest that regular endurance exercises improve the lipid profile, that is to say, reduced total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-C and increased HDL-C.

Endurance exercise is typically performed at submaximal intensity, with the main purpose of progressively moving the anaerobic threshold, i.e., the beginning of anaerobic metabolism and lactate production, towards higher exercise intensity.

Endurance exercises lead to improved performance and have useful effects on individuals susceptible to cardiovascular diseases and endurance exercises with the proper intensity and duration are more effective than resistance exercises in increasing the levels of HDL-C.

Habitual endurance training has been shown to improve aerobic fitness through central (e.g., increased stroke volume) and peripheral (e.g., increased mitochondrial content) adaptations. In addition, evidence from the literature suggests that improvements in neural and hypertrophic pathways lead to increases in muscle strength.
